The StoryFutures Xperience programme will enter its second distribution stage with VR screenings, taking place from December 2023 to March 2024 across the nations, through partner cinema venues, such as Depot (Lewes), Showroom (Sheffield), Chapter (Cardiff), Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre (Dundee) and Queen’s Film Theatre (Belfast).

We are also excited to announce that three new partners, Wales Millennium Centre (Cardiff), Nerve Centre (Derry) and Leeds Young Film, will be joining the programme in December. Each of the three partners have plans to carry out VR screenings from December to March 2024, which will incorporate VR into future film festival plans, existing venue activities, and in-cinema research screenings for the programme.

Nerve Centre will launch the first of its research screenings on Saturday 16th December, and audience members will have the opportunity to experience three of StoryFutures catalogued VR works within the cinema space (Monoliths, When Something Happens, Kindred); these screenings will continue throughout January.

Depot will launch Sunday VR sessions from the 28th of December until the end of March; the sessions will alternate between in-cinema and interactive screenings, commencing with Laika through January. The screened StoryFutures VR catalogued experiences will be updated throughout the period in response to audience engagement with each piece of work.

Showroom will launch the next phase of the programme on the 1st of January, with two interactive foyer spaces running VR works everyday throughout January to March. This will also be accompanied by the official launch of the Showroom Xperience programme on the 20th January, where additional sessions will take place in The Creative Lounge.

As a part of the LGBTQ+ History Month in February, Showroom will also run VR screenings of Kindred from the 2nd to 4th of February. Check their website for more information on session times.

Queen’s Film Theatre and Dundee Contemporary Centre (DCA) will be running drop in and bookable VR sessions in the new year, with an opportunity to experience the VR work in both a cinema and interactive environment. DCA will be incorporating a weekly VR event into their programme every Saturday, commencing on the 20th January and continuing throughout February.

The StoryFutures Xperience programme is a dedicated VR distribution programme, working with leading independent cinema venues and arts centres to innovate opportunities for audiences across the UK, supported by the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding.
