StoryFutures Academy is delighted to announce an additional eleven professional placements with leading-edge creative media companies in the UK to help propel your career. Successful applicants will receive a fee of £7,500 - £15,000 for a placement of between 10 – 24 weeks, mentorship, and the option to take part in immersive technology training in March 2022. This opportunity will run from January 2022 – July 2022, with a negotiable, hybrid work pattern and location. The final fee is dependent on the length of the contract, experience level, and industry pay standards in that sector.

Nexus Studios

Nexus White

Nexus Studios (based in London, LA, and Sydney) makes film and interactive media. Be it handcrafted or high-tech, they create heartfelt stories and experiences that transform brands and engage audiences through the power of entertainment and culture. Their world-class roster of directing talent is backed by their 180-seat studio and team of experienced production staff, creative thinkers, animators, technical directors, coders, illustrators, designers, and makers. A rostrum room, green screen shooting studio, edit suite, render farm, craft, and electronic workshop further allow them to do everything in-house. Their work includes Academy Award-nominated animations, Grammy-nominated music videos, D&AD black pencil, and triple Cannes Grand Prix winning commercials.


3D Generalist with Nexus Studios

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

  • Experience in Substance Painter / Photoshop
  • Experience in 3D modeling, UV mapping, and Texturing
  • Experience with PBR pipeline and Unity (knowledge of texturing, lighting, and animation pipelines)
  • Creating 3D assets in an established art style for use in game-engine

Digital Designer with Nexus Studios

Requirements

  • Experience with Photoshop

  • Designing and compositing artwork for a mobile app
  • Working with developers and creative teams to make informed design decisions

ISO Design

ISO White

ISO Design is a digital media and software studio. They design, direct and build large-scale interactive and immersive media projects. They specialise in design-led cultural projects for Museums, Galleries and Brand Experience Centres; they also create motion graphics and animated content for television and create ambitious online digital projects that are experienced across web, social and mobile. Their in-house team includes live-action directors, 2D and 3D animators, graphic and interface designers, software developers, scriptwriters, content researchers, social media managers and producers.


3D Modeller with ISO Design

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

Working as an assistant to Lead Designer, constructing real-time environments from primarily 3D scanned assets.

Essential:

  • Experience in using a wide array of 3D assets
  • Experience in optimising 3D assets for real-time (Clean up, optimise and prep 3D scanned assets)
  • Ability to balance quality visuals and real-time performance
  • Well organised with good scene building / management skills
  • Experience in 3D modelling, UV mapping and Texturing
  • Unity (knowledge of texturing, lighting and animation pipelines)
  • Perforce (version control)

Desirable:

  • Interest in documentary or digital storytelling
  • Experience in creating immersive installations
  • Experience in creating spatialized audio
  • Skilled in VFX atmospherics and environmental lighting

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

Need hands-on experience of working across fast-moving projects with a wide array of assets, being managed across multiple production teams.

Essential:

  • Workflow management across multiple teams
  • Working with 3D model assets
  • Ability to clean up, optimise and reformat assets

Events Production Assistant with Produce UK

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

  • Creation of mood boards and signage bibles
  • Research and creation of trend reports
  • Proven experience of Adobe software ideally Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Passion for graphic design
  • Extensive event experience is not essential however an understanding of the event production process is key
  • Potential to assist Project Manager on-site at live events
  • Proven experience of using Keynote
  • Demonstrable experience in research skills

Produce need an organised person who is able to work well under pressure. A flexible, self-motivating attitude is key as this role will include mostly remote-working though there will be weekly reporting on tasks via Keynote/Zoom to discuss key learnings and/or present findings. Excellent communication skills are essential as the applicant will need to be willing to talk to people from a range of ages and backgrounds at live events. Applicants may also be tasked with attending events e.g. UK degree shows/exhibitions as a representative of Produce UK and report findings to the wider team.

Marketing & Communications Assistant with BFI

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

To work within marketing of cultural and digital campaigns to support the delivery of nationwide campaigns for projects that dovetails with UNBOXED's overarching brand.

  • Demonstrable understanding of digital marketing communications and technology, with the ability to learn the technical aspects of the role quickly.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of HTML and CSS and digital video formats.
  • Proven experience of image-manipulation software and of using an online content management system

History / Factual TV Researcher with Uplands TV

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

  • Help find archive footage and images for use in a 90-minute documentary
  • Help with clearing footage and negotiating costs
  • Organise workflows and keep meticulous records
  • Undertake forensic primary source historical research (both online and in-person at libraries and archives)
  • Write briefings and fact-check scripts
  • Liaise with contributors (historians, experts, members of the public)
  • Identify and liaise with potential filming locations
  • Support camera crew on shoots

The ideal candidate would have experience in both Film/Stills Archive and Historical Research, but we will consider applicants with a strong track record in just one of these areas.

IT skills and familiarity with archives of all sorts (film libraries, museums, galleries, local history hubs) is essential. An understanding of genealogy resources (BMD certificates, passenger lists, wills etc.) would be an advantage.

Working in a small team, the applicant should be able to work independently, but will be flexible and willing to help out with other production tasks, if required.

Location: The production is London-based, and applicants should be prepared to spend some of the working week there. However, there is scope for some remote work.

StoryFutures Academy

StoryFutures Academy is the UK’s National Centre for Immersive Storytelling run by the National Film and Television School (NFTS) and Royal Holloway, University of London. Funded by the Arts Humanities and Research Council, part of UK Research and Innovation, the Academy develops cutting-edge creative training and research programmes to ensure the UK creative workforce is the most skilled in the world in the use of virtual, augmented and real-time production technology for immersive storytelling. Alumni of StoryFutures Academy labs have so far included Oscar and BAFTA winning Director Asif Kapadia, Oscar-winning VFX Supervisor Paul Franklin and Turner Prize-winning conceptual artist Gillian Wearing OBE.


Marketing & Communications Assistant with StoryFutures Academy

Main responsibilities

To deliver marketing and communications support for the StoryTrails / StoryFutures Academy Immersive Team, overseen by Marketing & Communications Manager, Immersive

  • Support the delivery of the communications and marketing activities for StoryTrails / StoryFutures Academy
  • Source / Create high-quality content to attract relevant target audiences to participate in the StoryTrails immersive experiences across the UK – including digital, online and social
  • Work closely with the wider team to write and proofread copy for email marketing and social media campaigns to drive engagement for StoryTrails / StoryFutures Academy
  • Assist with copywriting, design, and editing news stories and call outs for StoryTrails / StoryFutures Academy website
  • Assist with organisation of in-person and virtual training / events / masterclasses as required as part of the StoryTrails / StoryFuturesAcademy programme
  • Liaise with counterparts and colleagues at Royal Holloway, University of London, National Film & Television School, StoryFuturesAcademy, and StoryFutures to maximise communications opportunities for the StoryTrails project
  • To assist with ad hoc marketing projects to support the delivery of the StoryTrails / StoryFutures Academy programmes

Essential skills

  • Prior knowledge of media industry – Film/TV/Games
  • A keen interest in emerging technologies and innovation such as Virtual Reality (VR) / Augmented Reality (AR) / Virtual Production (VP)
  • Minimum of 3 years working in a Comms/Marketing/Digital/ Social Media role (agency or in house)
  • Social media savvy with strong capabilities in Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Design skills and knowledge of Canva, Photoshop, InDesign or other design software
  • Highly organised and able to multitask effectively
  • Excellent copywriting and written English skills l
  • Computer literate – Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Able to work under pressure and independently where required

Script Editors with StoryFutures Academy

Description of role and sample responsibilities:

Need proven experience of writing and editing (published) factual stories in compelling ways, an ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and on fast turnaround schedules.

Essential experience:

  • A track record of Excellent and dynamic writing skills most ideally in factual (though fiction experience considered)
  • Experience in developing storylines/story beats and a strong eye for character
  • Experience in honing and editing scripts
  • Able to work on fast turnaround productions
  • Experience in or ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Experience in either documentary, digital storytelling, or short-form storytelling
  • Interest in new innovative (3d) forms of storytelling
  • Ability to target writing style and tone with audience/s the media form is trying to reach, in mind

Desirable:

  • Some basic experience of interactive, place-based or some form of immersive storytelling (though not essential)
  • Interest and/ or experience in social history storytelling
  • Interest and/or experience of use of archive in storytelling

Length of engagement: 5-6 months
